What are the best ways to educate people about why they should buy local and organic food?

How do we reach out to people and share some of the problems of our modern food system. How do help people know that much of world trade and cheap food policy causes people to lose their land and the chance to feed themselves and that for many people, the global food system now means increased risk of starvation as a few corporate giants change the whole playing field. Food and Agriculture issues are incredably complicated, the more I learn, the more I am compelled to learn and to take action. There are many social, and environmental injustices and tragedies taking place around the world. Knowledge gives us power and fuels a bit of outrage, enough to get us to change complacent habits and do something different. As John Ikerd said, One person at a time chose to stop buying local, quality food, it will take one person at a time to choose local, quality food again. It begins with you.

    Product labelling would be an excellent place to start - the term "organic" is a misnomer. Proper useage of the term would be a nice change. In France, the more proper scientific term "biologique" is used, it is formally defined so everyone knows what it means, and labels are clear.

    One would think that grocery stores would have incentive to place informative guides, posters, and books out to convince the buying public to pay a little more for healthy food, but for some unknown reason, they have resisted doing so.

    Restaurants, too, should get in the game by running organic in-season specials. It would definitely attract attention from the health-conscious public.

    Finally, every student should be educated from an early age about how to make wise food choices. This is in direct contrast to the last many years of education policy where students apparently learned how to spot corporate food labels from the candy machine. Kids today need to vist a real farm to understand where their food comes from, and the efforts it takes to provide it to them.

    I think the message is starting to be heard. More and more people are thinking about organic/local priorities. But I don't think it is scare tactics that will be most successful in keeping this trend going. We are already too scared of too many things and feel too helpless to do anything about it: terrorists, financial meltdown, global warming...

    It seems the most effective way would be to use the methods that stopped people littering or smoking or wearing fur coats. Personal shame!

    If you're eating a fruit from 3000 miles away in the middle of winter you should feel like you personally are polluting the planet. People should give you a weird look. You should be ashamed! You won't do it. Because you won't buy it in public, eat it in public or order it from a menu. Restaurants won't put pollutants on their menu and risk being knocked for it.
