Winter damaged ceanothus

Greetings! I have (had?) several Diamond Heights Ceanothus groundcover shrubs. These are the beautiful golden/charteuse leaved variety that have a dark blue diamond shaped marking on each leaf.
This winter did a number on them. Each one has turned totally dark brown, crunchy. Leaves are dead. Stems are not! So, my question is: Do I cut these back to the ground, so that they grow new stems, or will each stem shed its crispy brown leaves and grown new ones in the months to come?
Thank you so much for your time.
Sincerely,
Alice Skilton in Tacoma
