Dear Ruby, Why did you show a basket full of citrus fruit on the web in your article about 'Local farms thriving' as an example of a CSA share?As the Small Farm Program Coordinator at WSDA I'm very passionate about supporting all efforts toward developing our local food systems. We do a disservice to our farmers when we missrepresent what a true CSA is all about, i.e. Community Supported Agriculture. A well established means for a community of 'co-producers' to participate in the risks as well as the rewards of the hard work and long hours that go into producing wholesome, local food. Seasonality and regionality are key factors in educating consumers about sustainable food systems. If you are interested, I would love the opportunity to discuss this further. Thanks for your feedback. The photo we used on our website was from a recent visit to a farm in Buckley that offers CSA subscriptions. The owner I spoke with didn’t make it in the story because of time constraints. This farm happens to supplement its shares with fruit and produce from organic growers in Eastern Washington and California during the winter season when very little is growing in the Puget Sound area. Yes, I understand that the idea of CSA’s is to share in the farm’s bounty and risks. I also agree that seasonality and regionality are key as well. But it seems that farms are increasingly offering shares/produce that are grown out of region/state either because subscribers want it, or that it gives farmers something to offer during the cold months. The Buckley farmer I spoke with explained it this way—people need to eat, and if they’re going to store to buy organic, she might as well provide that. She procures the veggies and fruit from an organic co-op in California, so in way she’s supporting other farmers.
